Dyslexia is a common learning challenge that affects reading, writing, and spelling skills. As an employer of hairdressing/barbering apprentices, it’s important to understand dyslexia and provide appropriate support to ensure your apprentices can thrive in their roles.

Dyslexia is a neurodevelopmental disorder that impacts an individual’s ability to process language effectively. It’s important to note that dyslexia is not related to intelligence or a lack of desire to learn. People with dyslexia may experience difficulties in reading quickly and accurately, spelling words correctly, writing words and sentences, pronouncing words when reading aloud and understanding written information.

At the outset of your apprentice’s journey, Cheynes Training conducts a comprehensive initial assessment that includes screening for various learning challenges, such as dyslexia. If our evaluation indicates that your apprentice may have a learning difficulty, we will implement appropriate learning adjustments to support their successful completion of the apprenticeship programme. However, as their employer, you can provide additional support. Here are a few suggestions:

Provide verbal instructions:

Supplement written instructions with clear verbal explanations for tasks and procedures.

Allow extra time:

Give dyslexic apprentices additional time for reading, writing, and completing reception duties.

Adjust written materials:

Use dyslexia-friendly fonts, coloured paper, or digital formats with customisable backgrounds to improve readability. Offer one-on-one support: Provide mentoring or additional sessions to help with their assessments and skill development.

Create a quiet workspace:

Where possible, designate a quieter a quieter area for tasks requiring concentration, away from distractions.

Remember, every individual with dyslexia is unique, and their needs may vary. Open communication with your apprentices about their specific challenges and required support is key to ensuring their success in the hairdressing industry.
