Employers! Do you know your responsibilities during the party season?

The festive season is a welcome opportunity to celebrate after a busy year, but for employers with young team members, Christmas parties bring added responsibilities. Salon owners and managers have a legal duty to protect all employees from harm — and that duty doesn’t end when the tinsel goes up or the party moves off-site.

Under health and safety law, employers (and managers) must take reasonable steps to safeguard their employees whenever work-related events are held. This includes Christmas parties organised or endorsed by the salon, whether at a restaurant, a function room, or even in-salon after work one evening. When under-18s are involved, extra care and supervision are essential.

Alcohol is one of the main risks at seasonal gatherings, of course. Serving or allowing underage drinking is unlawful, and if using an outside venue, employers should ensure that bar staff are briefed, and soft drink options are plentiful. Clear communication with your young team before the event helps set expectations about behaviour, particularly around alcohol (and drug use). A reminder that alcohol is off-limits at salon events can prevent problems before they start.

Sadly, incidents of sexual harassment can sometimes occur during social events. Employers remain liable if any inappropriate behaviour happens at any salon event. Reinforcing standards of conduct, reviewing safeguarding policies, and making sure there’s a clear reporting route are all practical steps to reduce risk.

People travelling home from salon events is another area to manage carefully. Employers should consider arranging safe transport options or encourage any vulnerable team members to be picked up by a family member. Whatever happens, make certain your young team are not left to find their own way late at night.

Finally, think about social media. A quick briefing on responsible posting can protect both the business’s reputation and employee privacy.

With a little preparation and clear communication, salons can enjoy a festive celebration that is both safe and memorable — one that reflects the warmth and professionalism of your salon and ensures your team have a great party experience.
