Hairstation Academy Story
Hairstation Academy is based in Margate, Kent. The academy has been running very successfully for over 9 years and is managed by Janet and Marie. Since the academy has been set up, both Janet and Marie have noticed an increase in the number of homeless people within their town. Recent figures from homelessness charity Shelter show one in every 274 people in Kent is either homeless, living in temporary accommodation or a rough sleeper.
They both wanted to help so began to offer free haircuts. Janet said “We decided to do this as homelessness in the area is growing, it also helps with confidence as they usually have low self-esteem but they want to try to improve their appearance”. The learners didn’t want to do it as a ‘one off’, they now offer this service all year round. They offer a wash and cut and style if they require it. The majority of the homeless people that come into the academy are male, they are more than happy to carry out the service on females as well.
Both Janet and Marie agree that this is good for enhancement for the apprentices and hope it makes someone who is having a bad day a little bit happier.
