As we approach the festive season, employers are reminded of their duty of care to ensure, as far as reasonably practicable, the health and safety of their employees.  It is particularly important to remember that Festive parties are an ‘extension of the workplace’ and it is crucial that you establish a clear and firm policy on conduct at work social events. Many employers choose to send a statement out via email, ensuring that everyone has seen the policy before any event takes place.

Specific consideration must be given to the measures put in place to safeguard employees under the age of eighteen. This should include the risks associated with young people attending events such as: alcohol consumption, supervision arrangements and transportation to, and from the event. Parent/Carer consent permitting the young person to attend should also be obtained.

Further information regarding the laws about alcohol and young people is available here.
